whatever it is, it isn't strenuous enough to make it reboot from the log-in screen so I doubt it would be replicated by booting either into the BIOS or from my Knoppix disc, - though I will try it. I cant reinstall all the software principally because I havent got a Windows 2000 install disc for the Compaq or

When I use the proper shutdown process, the computer says it is now ok to shutdown your computer, it shutsdown automatically, is off for 2 seconds and then reboots mysteriously like it has a mind of its own. Any suggestions for what is causing this problem?
